01 / Introduction
This Privacy Policy explains how ClearRead ("the extension", "we", "us") handles information when you use the ClearRead Chrome extension. ClearRead is a browser extension designed to improve text readability on websites. We built ClearRead with a clear principle: your reading preferences are your own business, not ours.
02 / Information we collect
ClearRead saves only the settings you configure yourself. This data is stored locally and is not transmitted to any server.
global_settings: Your default font, size, contrast, and spacing preferences.
settings_example.com: Site-specific overrides you've set for individual websites.
scope_example.com: Whether you've chosen global or per-site mode for a domain.
This data is stored using Chrome's built-in chrome.storage.local API. This description reflects the existing policy and should be checked against the shipped extension code before publication.
03 / Information we do not collect
The existing policy states that ClearRead does not collect or transmit browsing history, webpage content, personal information, device fingerprint data, usage analytics, crash telemetry, or payment information. It also states that the core extension does not include analytics scripts, telemetry calls, or remote-server connections.
04 / Chrome permissions explained
storage: saves readability settings locally. activeTab: applies settings to the current tab. scripting: injects styles to adjust font rendering. host permissions: allow style injection on websites. Review the extension manifest and implementation to confirm these descriptions are accurate before publication.
05 / How ClearRead works
The original policy describes this process: a webpage opens; locally saved settings are read; styles are applied; popup changes are saved locally and reflected in the page. It states that the style application process is local.
06 / Data storage
The original policy states that data is stored using Chrome's chrome.storage.local API, is not synced to Google's servers by default, is typically removed when the extension is uninstalled, and can be cleared using “Reset to Defaults” in the extension popup.
