01 — Introduction

About this policy

This Privacy Policy explains how ClearRead ("the extension", "we", "us") handles information when you use the ClearRead Chrome extension. ClearRead is a browser extension designed to improve text readability on websites.

We built ClearRead with a clear principle: your reading preferences are your own business, not ours. This policy reflects that commitment in plain language.

02 — Information we collect

What ClearRead stores

ClearRead saves only the settings you configure yourself. This data is stored locally and is not transmitted to any server.

global_settings Your default font, size, contrast, and spacing preferences Local only
settings_example.com Site-specific overrides you've set for individual websites Local only
scope_example.com Whether you've chosen global or per-site mode for a domain Local only

This data is stored using Chrome's built-in chrome.storage.local API. It is intended to be accessible only by the ClearRead extension and remains on your own device.

03 — Information we do not collect

What we never touch

ClearRead does not collect, transmit, or process any of the following:

ClearRead does not include analytics scripts, telemetry calls, or connections to remote servers as part of its core functionality.

04 — Chrome permissions explained

Why we need each permission

ClearRead requests only the minimum permissions necessary. Here is exactly what each one does:

Permission Why it's needed What we don't use it for
storage Saves your readability settings locally on your device No cloud sync, no remote access
activeTab Applies your settings to the current tab you're viewing Does not read page content or URLs
scripting Injects a small CSS stylesheet to adjust font rendering Does not execute arbitrary code or access your data
host_permissions Allows style injection to work on any website you visit Does not collect or transmit anything from any website
05 — How ClearRead works

The technical process

Understanding how ClearRead operates helps confirm that no data collection is possible by design:

1
You open a webpage
ClearRead's content script activates on the current tab. It reads only your locally saved settings from chrome.storage.local.
2
Settings are applied locally
A single <style> tag is injected into the page with CSS rules based on your preferences. No network request is made.
3
You adjust settings in the popup
Changes are written to chrome.storage.local on your device. The content script updates the injected styles in real time.
4
Nothing leaves your device
ClearRead is not designed to communicate with any external server, API, or third-party service. The entire style application process is local.
06 — Data storage

Where your settings live

All data is stored using Chrome's chrome.storage.local API, which keeps data in your browser's local profile directory on your own computer or device.

We do not have access to this data and have not built any mechanism to read, modify, or delete it remotely. It is intended to remain entirely under your control.

07 — Third-party services

External services

ClearRead does not integrate with or send data to any third-party services, including analytics platforms, advertising networks, or data brokers.

The extension's font files (Atkinson Hyperlegible, OpenDyslexic) are bundled locally within the extension package. No external font CDN requests are made when you use these fonts.

ClearRead does not require any external services to provide its core functionality, which is governed by Google's own privacy policy.

08 — Children's privacy

Use by children

ClearRead does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children under the age of 13. Because the extension is not designed to collect personal data, it is intended to be suitable for use by people of all ages.

If you are a parent or guardian and have concerns, please contact us. We are happy to clarify how the extension works.

09 — Changes to this policy

Policy updates

If we ever update this Privacy Policy, the new version will be published on this page with an updated date at the top. We will not make changes that reduce your privacy protections without clear notice.

Given that ClearRead is not designed to collect personal data, material changes to this policy are unlikely. Any future premium features that involve data handling will be clearly disclosed and will require explicit opt-in.
